What a Kid in State Prison Taught Me About Freedom

What a Kid in State Prison Taught Me About Freedom

He was sixteen. All he wanted was to play football.

His mom had one job. Show up to one meeting with a signed permission slip. She didn't.

He got cut from the program. Hurt and angry, he started spending time with kids from his neighborhood. Within weeks, a robbery went wrong. Someone got hurt. He got caught.

He caught a break, technically. They didn't prosecute him as an adult. But for a kid who had never even been to juvenile hall, that break still meant state prison. Up to age twenty-five.

I represented him. I loved him. I still think about him.

He had every reason to stay stuck in victim mode. A father who wasn't there. A mother whose alcoholism kept her from doing the one job that was hers to do. A single unsigned slip that started the whole unraveling.

Instead, he made a choice most people never have to make, because most people never lose everything at once.

He decided the four walls of that cell could not contain his mind.

He used what little programming the prison offered. He did the internal work nobody could make him do. And one day he said this to me about his mother:

"I had to forgive my mom cause she just doesn't have it. She doesn't have it to give, so she can't give it to me. If I don't, I'ma stay stuck."

That's not a kid making excuses. That's a kid who found the one freedom nobody could lock up.

Later, he stood in front of a parole board and told them the truth about all of it. Not as a growth performance. Because he'd done the work.

Liberation isn't a place you get to. It's a decision you make daily, in the place you find yourself.

He taught me that. Not the other way around.

Lori A. Harris, Life Mastery & Integrative Change Coach

After over thirty years as a defense trial attorney, trying misdemeanors to capital offenses, I sat side by side with folks the world had written off. I learned more about freedom in courtrooms and lock-ups than anywhere else in my life. I'm what you get when you cross a preacher's kid with a trial lawyer and a coach. Direct. Grounded. I face the truth and let it stand on its own. I work from three levers: awareness, decision, and question. Gratitude and forgiveness sit underneath it all, along with a belief that liberation is a daily practice, a decision made each day. Today I serve as an Integrative Change Coach and Life Mastery Consultant, certified through the Brave Thinking Institute. My favorite pronoun is "we." I write a weekly column, Unlock Your Life, and host a podcast by the same name. I bring all of it into The Decidedly Dispatch. Choose free.
